Xingzhi School, Beijing
Three schoolchildren stand up to get a better view as they listen intently to a lesson from their teacher. Xingzhi School is a private academy founded by teacher and activist Huang He in 2001 which currently enrolls 1,200 students from migrant farmer-workers' families in the Beijing area. This effort to educate the children of migrant workers is a new approach in the old tradition of education, unprecedented in Chinese society. In September 2004, Xingzhi School was the first of its kind to receive official certification from the Chinese Ministry of Education.
